There Is No Normal Life, Wyatt
“There Is no normal life, Wyatt, it’s just life,” Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) said to Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) in the 1993 classic movie Tombstone. I love that movie and many of the things that it represents. It’s hard to go past it when I see it in the channel lineup.
What do I want? A normal business cycle that feeds us all year long, not just during the construction or growing season. In other words, I want is a normal life. It turns out there is no normal life when it comes to what we do, it’s just life.
In a previous INSIDER article, I suggested that our acres were down a bit in 2019 (even though we don’t have acres). We have gone along for over 20 years with what seems like a normal life: realizing growth in sales, growth in products, growth in the space we occupy, growth in the number of employees we have and growth in the cost of our health insurance, etc., etc.. We have built a respectable business and our heart is in our brand. We feel that we have what our customers want and what our competition envies. We have what is worth fighting to achieve.
One can do the right things, such as build better stuff and promote the heck out of it, but we can’t control how and when people spend. We have to do the same things a seed company does when their acres are down, we have to go line up more acres. We adapt to the changing landscape to keep ourselves fit and help assure our future. We “Get Over It,” as Doc Holliday said after the above quote.
I’m your Huckleberry, just say when. We will be at your service.
